Visual Description
Anthrax picea is a species of bee fly (family Bombyliidae). Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, individuals exhibit the characteristic robust, somewhat hairy body form typical of many bombyliids.[1] The wings often display distinct patterns, which are common diagnostic features within the genus Anthrax.[2]
Biology and Classification
Anthrax picea was described by N.L. Marston in 1963 as part of his revision of the Nearctic species of the albofasciatus group within the genus Anthrax.[2] It is an accepted species within the family Bombyliidae, a group of flies commonly known as bee flies due to their resemblance to bees and their habit of hovering near flowers.[2]
