Visual Description
Anthrax daphne is a species of bee fly (family Bombyliidae). Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a robust, hairy body typical of many bombyliids.[1] The wings exhibit characteristic dark, mottled patterning, often with distinct, irregular patches of pigmentation that are diagnostic for the genus. The body is covered in dense, often brownish or yellowish setae, which provide a fuzzy appearance.
General Information
Anthrax daphne was originally described by C.R. Osten Sacken in 1886 as Argyramoeba daphne.[2] It is currently classified within the genus Anthrax in the family Bombyliidae.[2]
It is important to note that the term "anthrax" in some scientific literature refers to the bacterial disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, which is unrelated to the dipteran genus Anthrax.[3]
