Visual Description
Anthrax bowdeni is a species of bee fly within the family Bombyliidae. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, individuals exhibit the characteristic robust, somewhat flattened body form typical of the genus Anthrax.[1] The body is covered in dense, often patterned setae (hairs), and the wings frequently display distinct dark, mottled, or banded pigmentation patterns, which are diagnostic features for many species in this genus.[1]
Distribution and Status
Anthrax bowdeni was described by Marcos Báez in 1983, with the type locality in the Canary Islands.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species.[2]
Note: The name bowdeni is also associated with Haematopota bowdeni (Oldroyd, 1952), a species of horse fly (family Tabanidae), which should not be confused with this bombyliid species.[3]
