Visual Description
Anthrax argyropygus is a species of bee fly characterized by a robust, hairy body typical of the family Bombyliidae. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a distinct pattern of dark, mottled wings, often featuring irregular, brownish-black patches or bands that contrast with the more translucent areas of the wing membrane.[1] The body is densely covered in fine, often pale or yellowish-grey setae (hairs), which provide a fuzzy appearance, particularly on the thorax and abdomen.[1]
Biology and Distribution
Anthrax argyropygus was described by the entomologist Christian Rudolph Wilhelm Wiedemann in 1828.[2] Like other members of the genus Anthrax, these flies are generally associated with parasitoid life histories, where larvae typically develop within the nests of other insects, such as solitary bees or wasps.[3]
