Anthomyia edwardsi is a dipteran species. Based on observations of preserved museum specimens, the species exhibits the characteristic body plan of the family Anthomyiidae, with a robust, bristly thorax and abdomen. The specimens display a dark, often blackish, coloration on the thorax and abdomen, which is typical for many members of the genus Anthomyia. The wings are clear and membranous, with distinct venation patterns characteristic of the order Diptera.[1]
Anthomyia edwardsi (Malloch, 1934) was originally described as Hylemyia edwardsi.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Anthomyia.[2]
While the family Anthomyiidae has been studied in the context of fossil records, historical taxonomic revisions have often reclassified or designated fossil specimens as nomina dubia. Notably, previous studies have indicated that compression fossils historically assigned to the genus Anthomyia have been designated as nomina dubia.[3]
