Anthomyia chilensis was originally described by Macquart in 1851 under the basionym Chortophila chilensis [2]. It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Anthomyia [2].
While some fossil specimens from the middle Eocene Kishenehn Formation were historically assigned to the genus Anthomyia, recent revisions have designated these as nomina dubia due to insufficient morphological detail, and other related fossil species have been reclassified as unplaced Brachycera [3].
