Visual Description
Anthalia bulbosa is a small fly within the family Hybotidae. Based on observations of museum specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, the species exhibits a compact, dark-bodied form typical of many dance flies. Key visible traits include a rounded, bulbous thorax and a relatively small head with prominent eyes. The wings are generally clear or slightly tinted, with venation patterns characteristic of the genus Anthalia.[1]
Ecology
Anthalia bulbosa has been documented visiting flowers of various plant families, including Viburnum (Adoxaceae), Ericaceae, and Saxifragaceae, suggesting it plays a role as a flower visitor.[2]
History
The species was described by the entomologist Axel Leonard Melander in 1902, originally under the name Euthyneura bulbosa.[3]
