Visual Description
Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Anorostoma are small flies characterized by a generally robust, bristly appearance typical of the family Heleomyzidae.[1] Visible traits include a distinctively patterned thorax and abdomen, often featuring mottled or spotted coloration in shades of brown, grey, or yellowish-tan.[1] The wings are typically clear or lightly infuscated, and the legs are often stout with prominent setae (bristles).[1]
Overview
Anorostoma is a genus of flies in the family Heleomyzidae, first described by the entomologist Hermann Loew in 1862.[2] As members of the Heleomyzidae, they are often referred to as "sun flies" or "heleomyzid flies."[3]
