Visual Description
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Anoplothyrea exhibit characteristic features of the family Asilidae (robber flies).[1] The specimens display a robust, elongated body form typical of the family, with a distinct, prominent thorax and a slender, tapering abdomen.[1] The head is characterized by large, prominent compound eyes that occupy a significant portion of the head capsule, and the presence of a well-developed mystax (a dense cluster of bristles on the face), which is a diagnostic feature for many robber flies.[1]
General Information
Anoplothyrea is a genus of robber flies (family Asilidae) first described by de Meijere in 1914.[2] As members of the Asilidae, they are predatory insects known for their agile flight and ability to capture other insects in mid-air.[2]
