The available fossil specimens of Anopheles rottensis are preserved in a manner typical of the Late Oligocene deposits of Rott, Germany. Due to the nature of these fossil impressions, fine morphological details are often limited, and specific diagnostic traits such as wing venation patterns or delicate appendage structures may be difficult to resolve in the available imagery.[1]
Anopheles rottensis is a fossil species of anopheline mosquito. It is known from the Late Oligocene of Germany, dating to approximately 25 million years ago.[2] It is recognized as one of only two fossil anopheline mosquitoes currently known to science, the other being Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus?) dominicanus.[2]
