Anopheles pictipennis is a species within the genus Anopheles, a cosmopolitan group of mosquitoes that currently includes 465 formally named species. The genus is divided into seven subgenera: Anopheles, Baimaia, Cellia, Kerteszia, Lophopodomyia, Nyssorhynchus, and Stethomyia [2]. Anopheles pictipennis is classified within the subgenus Nyssorhynchus [3].
The species was described by R. A. Philippi in 1865 in the publication "Aufzahlung der chilenischen Dipteren" [4].
