Classification and Biology
Anopheles perplexens is a species within the genus Anopheles, a cosmopolitan group of mosquitoes that currently includes 465 formally named species.[2] The species was originally described by C.S. Ludlow in 1907.[3]
The genus Anopheles is divided into seven subgenera: Anopheles, Baimaia, Cellia, Kerteszia, Lophopodomyia, Nyssorhynchus, and Stethomyia.[2] Classification into these subgenera is primarily based on the number and positioning of specialized setae on the male gonocoxites. While some subgenera are monophyletic, the genus Anopheles as a whole is considered paraphyletic due to the inclusion of other genera such as Bironella.[2]
