This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Anopheles neivai is a mosquito species within the subgenus Kerteszia. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, specimens exhibit the characteristic slender, long-legged body form typical of the genus Anopheles. The images show the mosquito with its characteristic resting posture, where the body is held at an angle to the surface. The coloration includes dark and light scaling patterns on the wings and legs, which are consistent with the morphological features used for identification within this group.[1]
DNA barcoding, specifically targeting a 535 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene, has been established as a reliable method for distinguishing Anopheles neivai from other species in the subgenus Kerteszia, such as An. bellator, An. homunculus, An. cruzii, and An. laneanus. Genetic studies have shown that K2P genetic distances between An. neivai and these related species range from 8.3% to 12.6%, which is well above the threshold for intraspecific variation.[2]
Research on An. neivai populations in the Chocó region of Colombia has identified an optimized barcode threshold of 1.3% for unambiguous species differentiation. Within this population, genetic distances were observed between 0% and 2.5%, with 18 distinct haplotypes identified, highlighting the genetic variability present within the species. This molecular approach is a valuable tool for malaria surveillance and control, aiding in the accurate identification of An. neivai and the mapping of its geographic distribution.[2]
