Visual Description
Anopheles minimus is a mosquito species. Observations from preserved specimens show the characteristic slender, elongated body form typical of the genus Anopheles, with long, delicate legs and narrow, veined wings. The coloration is generally muted, often featuring shades of brown or grey, which provides camouflage in their natural environments.[1]
Ecology and Malaria Transmission
Anopheles minimus sensu lato is recognized as a primary malaria vector in Southeast Asia, particularly in the China-Myanmar border region. It has been identified as a dominant species within the local Anopheles community.[2]
Field studies in this region have shown that populations of An. minimus exhibit seasonal abundance, with numbers peaking in May. They are more abundant during the rainy season compared to the dry season.[2]
Blood-meal analysis indicates a strong preference for human hosts, with a high human blood index. Feeding preferences have been recorded as: humans (79.8%), cattle (10.6%), pigs (5.8%), and dogs (3.8%).[2]
Studies using nested PCR on pooled salivary glands have detected Plasmodium vivax in An. minimus populations, with infection rates estimated between 0.07% and 0.7%.[2]
