Anopheles melas is a mosquito species within the family Culicidae. Observations of museum specimens reveal the characteristic slender, elongated body form typical of the genus Anopheles. The specimens exhibit long, thin legs and narrow, elongated wings, with the characteristic resting posture of the genus where the body is held at an angle to the surface. The coloration is generally muted, consistent with many other members of the Anopheles gambiae complex.[1]
Anopheles melas is a member of the Anopheles gambiae complex. Genetic studies investigating SINE200 retrotransposon insertion polymorphisms have shown that A. melas lacks the specific SINE200 insertions found at several loci (such as S200 X6.1 and S200 2R12D) that are present in certain molecular forms of Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto.[2]
