General Information
Anopheles chiriquiensis is a species of mosquito within the genus Anopheles, which is the nominotypical genus of the subfamily Anophelinae [2]. The genus Anopheles is a cosmopolitan group that is considered an ancient lineage, with some estimates suggesting it may have appeared as early as the Jurassic period [2]. The species was described by Komp in 1936 [3].
Visual Description
The visual characteristics of Anopheles chiriquiensis are consistent with the general morphology of the genus Anopheles[1]. As with other members of the genus, they exhibit the typical mosquito body plan, including a slender abdomen, long legs, and a pair of wings. Due to the limitations of the available photographic material, specific diagnostic features such as the arrangement of specialized setae on the male gonocoxites—which are often used for subgeneric classification—cannot be resolved in these images[1].
