Visual Description
Anopheles barbirostris is a mosquito species. Based on examination of preserved specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, the species exhibits characteristic features of the genus, including slender, elongated legs and a distinctively shaped thorax.[1] The wings are elongated and narrow, typical of culicids, with visible venation patterns.[1]
Vector Competence
Research into the Anopheles barbirostris complex, which includes several sibling species (A1, A2, A3, and A4), has demonstrated significant variation in their ability to transmit Plasmodium parasites.[2]
Laboratory studies using Thai strains of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax have shown that:
- Species A3 and A4 are considered non-potential vectors for P. falciparum, showing no evidence of oocyst or sporozoite development.[2]
- Regarding P. vivax, species A4 is a non-potential vector, while species A1, A2, and A3 exhibit low-potential vector competence, with sporozoite rates ranging from approximately 6.7% to 11.8%.[2]
