Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Anopheles atratipes exhibits the characteristic slender, long-legged body form typical of the family Culicidae.[1] The specimens display a generally dark coloration across the thorax and abdomen.[1]
Biology and Classification
Anopheles atratipes is a member of the Australasian Atratipes Group within the subgenus Anopheles.[2] The Atratipes Group is considered a relict taxon, representing a remnant of an ancestral form that was once more widely distributed.[2] Unlike many other members of the genus Anopheles, this species is not known to be a vector of human malarial parasites.[2]
The species was originally described by F.A.A. Skuse in 1889.[3]
