Overview
Anomoianthella is a genus of marine sponges in the family Ianthellidae (order Verongiida, class Demospongiae).[2]
Visual Description
The available dataset-derived image references for Anomoianthella are from observations that have been mapped to Anomoianthella (notably including records identified as Anomoianthella rubra).[2]
Biogeography and records
GBIF treats Anomoianthella as an accepted genus name (authorship Bergquist, 1980) within Ianthellidae and reports descendant taxa (i.e., species-level members) for this genus.[2]
Chemistry and “anomoian” alkaloid context
Verongiida sponges are known to produce bromotyrosine-derived alkaloids, including a set of compounds discussed as “anomoian” derivatives. In a study of the verongiid sponge Suberea ianthelliformis (order Verongiida), El-Demerdash et al. report “anomoian” alkaloids and note that previously reported “anomoian” A and B have been isolated from other verongiid sources including Anomoianthella popeae, linking the “anomoian” metabolite group to the genus Anomoianthella (even though their own specimens were from Suberea).[3]
The same work also cautions that bromotyrosine alkaloids are not strictly confined to a single order, so using secondary metabolites alone for fine-scale taxonomy/phylogeny can be unreliable.[3]
