Nomenclatural placement
GBIF treats Annulastrella ornata (Sollas, 1888) as an accepted species in the genus Annulastrella within Theneidae (Tetractinellida, Demospongiae). GBIF also records the original basionym as Sphinctrella ornatus Sollas, 1888.

Distribution and Ecology
Range (recent records)
A Miocene paleontology study comparing theneid spicules to living theneids reports that the living species Annulastrella ornata occurs in the eastern Atlantic (Azores and Cape Verde).
Fossil occurrence (Miocene)
Spicule-based evidence from late Early Miocene (Karpatian; latest Burdigalian-equivalent) bathyal deposits in the Vienna Basin (Central Paratethys, Slovakia) is discussed in relation to Annulastrella; the study identifies triactinal annulate spicules (cricotriods) that closely resemble those of Annulastrella—particularly similar to A. ornata—based on SEM-based morphological characterization of dissociated spicules.
