Visual Description
Museum specimens show Anheteromeyenia argyrosperma as a freshwater sponge colony with a conspicuous silvery/gray aspect in preserved material (consistent with the “silver-seeded” vernacular name). The colony form in the sampled images is compact and sheet-like/encrusting.
Taxonomic information
- Anheteromeyenia (Spongillidae) was created to include species previously placed in Heteromeyenia Potts that lack microscleres; a Zootaxa revision provides an emended generic diagnosis and diagnostic framework for identifying congeners.
- In that revision, A. argyrosperma is treated as one of the currently known species of Anheteromeyenia, and a species-level identification key is provided for separating A. argyrosperma from other congeners.
Nomenclature and occurrence data
- GBIF lists Anheteromeyenia argyrosperma (Potts, 1880) as an accepted species and provides the vernacular name “Silver-seeded Freshwater Sponge.”
