Based on examination of preserved holotype specimens, Androprosopa zelmae exhibits the characteristic morphology of the family Thaumaleidae, including a stalky body and broad wings.[1] The wings are membranous with a distinct venation pattern typical of the genus.[1]
Androprosopa zelmae was described by Arnaud and Boussy in 1994.[2] As a member of the family Thaumaleidae, it belongs to a group of small nematocerous Diptera known as trickle midges, which are typically associated with madicolous habitats such as rock-face seepages and waterfall margins.[3] Identification of species within the genus Androprosopa generally requires the examination of male terminalia.[3]
