Adults of the genus Androprosopa are small, typically ranging from 1.5 to 5.0 mm in length.[2] Observations from dataset imagery reveal a stalky body form with broad wings and a relatively short flagellum.[1][1][1]
Androprosopa is a genus of madicolous midges within the family Thaumaleidae.[2] These insects are restricted to madicolous habitats, which are characterized by thin films of water flowing over substrates such as rock-face seepages, waterfall margins, and the splash zones of cascading streams.[2]
Larvae are amphipneustic and exhibit a distinct jerking motion.[2] They possess hypognathous heads and unpaired prolegs, and their bodies often appear mottled due to the presence of chromatocytes beneath the cuticle.[2]
The genus Androprosopa comprises 59 described species and is one of seven recognized extant genera within the Thaumaleidae.[2] It is distributed across the Nearctic, Palaearctic, and Oriental regions.[2]
The genus was established by Mik in 1898.[3] The current genus concept incorporates Protothaumalea and Ornephnephilina as junior synonyms, following the classification proposed by Sinclair (1996).[2] Species-level identification typically requires the examination of male terminalia.[2]
