Visual Description
Ancala fasciata is a species of horse fly characterized by its robust, typical tabanid body form. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset indicate that the species exhibits a distinct pattern on the wings and abdomen.[1] The wings often show dark, banded or mottled pigmentation, which is a common feature in the genus. The abdomen typically displays a series of transverse bands or markings, contributing to its specific epithet fasciata. The eyes are large and prominent, as is characteristic of the family Tabanidae.
Ecology and Distribution
Ancala fasciata has been recorded in the Ipassa-IRET Makokou biosphere reserve in Gabon.[2] In a study conducted during the rainy season, it was identified as a relatively uncommon species, accounting for approximately 0.5% of the total tabanid specimens collected across various habitats, including primary forest, secondary forest, and village environments.[2]
