Visual Description
Anastrepha serpentina is a fruit fly species within the family Tephritidae. Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, the species exhibits characteristic tephritid morphology, including a patterned wing venation typical of the genus Anastrepha.[1] The body coloration is generally brownish or yellowish, consistent with other members of the genus.
Genetics and Evolution
The transformer (tra) gene, which functions as a memory device for sex determination via an auto-regulatory mechanism, has been characterized in Anastrepha serpentina.[2] In this species, the Tra protein is produced only in females. The sex-determination mechanism involving this gene likely existed in the common ancestor of the Ceratitis, Bactrocera, and Anastrepha lineages.[2]
