Based on examination of museum specimens, Anastrepha dissimilis exhibits characteristic features of the genus Anastrepha. The body displays the typical tephritid form, with a distinct pattern of pigmentation on the wings, which is a diagnostic trait for many species within this genus.[1]
Anastrepha dissimilis was described by Stone in 1942.[2] Recent integrative taxonomic research has clarified the identity of specimens previously attributed to this species. Specifically, studies have shown that Brazilian specimens formerly recognized as A. dissimilis are actually Anastrepha chiclayae Greene.[3] This reclassification was supported by morphological comparisons of the holotype (from Haiti) with paratypes and other specimens, as well as by geometric morphometrics and molecular analysis (COI sequences).[3] Consequently, A. dissimilis is not considered to be present in Brazil.[3]
