Anastrepha bistrigata is a fruit fly characterized by distinct wing patterns typical of the genus Anastrepha. Observations of museum specimens show a body structure consistent with other members of the serpentina species group, featuring a characteristic yellowish-brown coloration. The wings exhibit complex, dark-pigmented bands, which are diagnostic features for the genus.[1]
Anastrepha bistrigata belongs to the serpentina species group within the genus Anastrepha. It is morphologically similar to Anastrepha striata, but can be distinguished through morphometric analyses of the aculeus and wings, where aculeus length and width serve as reliable diagnostic characters.[2]
The species is restricted to the Central-West, Southeast, and South regions of Brazil. It is known to develop in guava (Psidium guajava).[2] Molecular characterization using partial sequences of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene has been used to develop species-specific primers to differentiate A. bistrigata from A. striata in ecological studies.[2]
