Visual Description
Anastrebla mattadeni is a species of bat fly, a group of specialized ectoparasitic insects. Based on examination of museum specimen images, the species exhibits the characteristic morphology of the family Hippoboscidae, including a dorsoventrally flattened body, which facilitates movement through the fur of its host. The specimens show a robust, sclerotized exoskeleton with a brownish coloration. The head is small and closely associated with the thorax, and the legs are well-developed with prominent claws adapted for clinging to host hair.[1]
Biology and Ecology
Anastrebla mattadeni was described by R.L. Wenzel in 1966 as part of a comprehensive study on the streblid batflies of Panama.[2] Like other members of its family, it is an obligate ectoparasite of bats. It has been documented interacting with bat species such as Anoura cultrata and Anoura geoffroyi lasiopyga.[3]
