Visual Description
Based on observations of museum specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Anarete are small, delicate flies characteristic of the family Cecidomyiidae.[1] They typically exhibit a slender body form with long, thin legs and wings that are relatively large in proportion to their body size.[1] The antennae are often prominent and moniliform (bead-like), a common trait among many gall midges.[1]
Ecology and Behavior
Anarete is a genus of midges within the family Cecidomyiidae, first described by Alexander Henry Haliday in 1833.[2] These insects have been documented visiting flowers, such as those in the family Apiaceae.[3]
Research into the collective behavior of insects has historically used Anarete pritchardi as a model organism for studying swarm kinematics and individual acceleration fields within swarms.[4]
