Visual Description
Anacanthaspis species exhibit a distinct, wasp-like appearance with a black and yellow banded abdomen. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a body characterized by a black thorax with yellow markings and a black abdomen featuring prominent yellow transverse bands.[1] The wings are typically yellowish or brownish with darker markings.[1]
Morphologically, the genus is characterized by an unarmed scutellum that is significantly wider than it is long, with a hind margin that is distinctly concave at the middle and composed of two rounded portions.[2] The eyes are bare or nearly so, and the abdomen is widest at the third or fourth segment.[2]
Distribution and Classification
Anacanthaspis is a genus of flies in the family Xylophagidae,[3] though it has historically been associated with the Coenomyiidae.[2] It is a monotypic genus containing the species Anacanthaspis bifasciata Röder, 1889.[2] The genus is distributed across Siberia, Manchuria, and Japan, with a recognized subspecies, A. bifasciata japonica Shiraki, 1932, reported from Japan.[2]
