Visual Description
Images of Amphoriscus semoni show a calcareous sponge with an upright, vase-/tube-like body form. The external surface appears commonly as a branching/branch-adjacent network of thin structural elements, with an overall fragile look typical of leucosolenid calcarea sponges. Specimen- and observation-based images also show the sponge attached to or partially embedded in a substrate (e.g., rock/collection surface), consistent with a sessile benthic lifestyle.
Taxonomic status
Amphoriscus semoni is treated as an accepted species name in GBIF (Breitfuss, 1896).[2]
Original description
The species is attributed to Breitfuss (1896), originally described as Amphoriscus semoni.[3]
