Visual Description
Amphoriscus oviparus is a calcareous sponge. Based on examination of preserved specimens, the organism exhibits a tubular or vase-like body form typical of many members of the genus Amphoriscus. The surface texture appears somewhat fibrous or spicular, consistent with the calcareous skeleton composed of triactine and/or tetractine spicules characteristic of the class Calcarea.[1]
Classification and History
Amphoriscus oviparus was originally described by Ernst Haeckel in 1872 under the basionym Sycaltis oviparus.[2] It is currently an accepted species within the genus Amphoriscus.[2]
