Visual Description
Members of the genus Amphipogon are small flies typical of the family Piophilidae. Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a body form characteristic of acalyptrate Diptera, with a generally slender to moderately robust habitus.[1] Visible traits include a distinct head with prominent compound eyes, a thorax that often appears shiny or metallic in certain lighting, and wings that are typically clear or slightly infuscated.[1] The legs are generally slender, and the abdomen is often cylindrical or slightly flattened.[1]
Biology and Classification
Amphipogon is a genus within the family Piophilidae, which is part of the superfamily Tephritoidea.[2] The genus is recognized within the subfamily Piophilinae.[2] Note that the name Amphipogon is also used for a genus of grasses in the family Poaceae, which should not be confused with this dipteran genus.[3]
