Visual Description
Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Amphicnephes are small flies characterized by distinct wing patterns.[1] The wings typically exhibit complex, mottled, or banded dark markings against a lighter, often hyaline or yellowish background.[1] The body is generally robust, with a coloration that often includes shades of brown or black, sometimes with metallic reflections.[1]
Ecology
Amphicnephes species have been observed visiting flowers, suggesting a role in pollination.[2] Specifically, Amphicnephes pullus has been recorded interacting with Serenoa repens (saw palmetto).[2]
History
The genus Amphicnephes was described by the entomologist Hermann Loew in 1873.[3]
