Visual Description
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Ampelomyia are associated with gall structures on host plants.[1] These galls often appear as distinct, sometimes spherical or filbert-like growths on the leaves or stems of Vitis species.[2] The galls can exhibit varied textures, ranging from relatively smooth to slightly irregular surfaces, and may show color variations depending on their developmental stage.[1]
Biology and Ecology
Ampelomyia is a genus of gall-inducing insects within the subfamily Cecidomyiinae.[3] The genus was described by Elsayed and Tokuda in 2019.[4] These insects are known to be associated with plants in the genus Vitis (grapevines) in both Palaearctic and Nearctic regions.[4] They induce galls on their host plants, which serve as both a habitat and a food source for the developing larvae.[2]
