Overview
Amorphinopsis is an accepted genus of marine demosponges in the family Halichondriidae, originally described by Carter in 1887.[2]
Visual Description
Dataset-linked specimen images associated with Amorphinopsis (primarily museum-preserved material) depict sponge bodies as compact, irregularly shaped masses with a visibly textured surface; some records show whole-mounted specimens rather than live colonies.
Ecology and host-associated community context (generalizable)
In a seagrass system in the southern Gulf of Mexico, Amorphinopsis spp. (e.g., Amorphinopsis atlantica) have been studied for their macrofaunal associations. Comparative sampling and analyses indicate that (i) associated macrofaunal assemblages differ among host species, and (ii) variation in assemblage structure is related not only to host morphology/size, but also to local environmental gradients (e.g., hydrodynamism and sedimentation regime).[3]
