Visual Description
Amblypsilopus retrovenus is a small, slender fly characteristic of the family Dolichopodidae. Observations from photographic records indicate that these flies possess a metallic, often iridescent body coloration, which is a common trait among members of the subfamily Sciapodinae. The wings are typically clear or lightly tinted, featuring distinct venation patterns typical of the genus. The legs are notably long and slender, often appearing disproportionately elongated relative to the body size, which aids in their characteristic movement and posture.[1]
History and Classification
Amblypsilopus retrovenus was originally described by Michael E. Irwin in 1974 under the name Sciopolina retrovena.[2] The species was later reclassified into the genus Amblypsilopus. The original description was published in the Annals of the Natal Museum as part of an account of the southern African genus Sciopolina.[2]
