Overview
Alpinosciara is a genus of dark-winged fungus gnats within the family Sciaridae. It was established by Heller and Menzel in 2021 to accommodate species that were previously classified within the Corynoptera crassistylata group. The genus is placed within the subfamily Megalosphyinae and currently includes 22 recognized species.[2][3]
Visual Description
The genus Alpinosciara consists of small, delicate flies typical of the family Sciaridae. While specific morphological traits are often microscopic, specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset exhibit the general body plan of sciarids, characterized by a slender, dark-colored body, relatively long legs, and large, prominent eyes.[1] Due to the small size of these insects, finer diagnostic features—such as the specific wing venation patterns or the structure of the male terminalia—are not resolvable in the available dataset images.[1]
