Overview
Alloxytropus is a genus of flies within the family Scenopinidae, first described by Bezzi in 1925 [2]. Members of this genus have been documented in regions such as Saudi Arabia, where they are noted for their potential importance in biological control [3].
Visual Description
Based on observations of Alloxytropus anomalus, these flies are small- to medium-sized, measuring approximately 4 mm in length [3]. They are characterized by an entirely yellowish head featuring a prominent, brownish ocellar triangle [3]. The proboscis, palpi, and antennae are also yellowish [3]. The mesonotum is typically yellowish or pale yellowish-brown, occasionally displaying two obscure, indistinct darker longitudinal stripes, while the scutellum is uniformly yellowish [3]. The wings are hyaline, and the legs are generally whitish-yellow, although the femora may sometimes appear brownish [3]. The abdomen consists of whitish-yellow to brownish tergites covered with short, whitish-yellow hairs, with uniformly yellowish-white sternites and a brownish-orange to yellowish-brown hypopygium [3].
Ecology
Larvae of the family Scenopinidae, to which Alloxytropus belongs, are generally recognized as being predaceous on other arthropods [3].
