Visual Description
The species Allotrichoma laterale is a member of the family Ephydridae. While specific morphological traits are often identified through detailed examination of male genitalia, such as the shape of the cerci, visual inspection of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset confirms the general habitus characteristic of the genus.[1]
Distribution and Morphology
Allotrichoma laterale (Loew, 1860) has been documented in the European part of Russia.[2] The species was originally described under the name Hecamede laterale Loew, 1860.[3]
In terms of male genital morphology, A. laterale can be distinguished from the related species A. leotoni by the structure of the cerci. In A. laterale, the cerci are broader in lateral view compared to those of A. leotoni, and A. laterale lacks the strong apical setae that are present on the cerci of A. leotoni.[2]
