Visual Description
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Allotrichoma are small flies typical of the family Ephydridae.[1] They exhibit a compact body form with a generally dark, often brownish or greyish, coloration.[1] The wings are typically clear or lightly infuscated, and the legs are relatively short.[1]
Biology and Classification
The genus Allotrichoma belongs to the tribe Hecamedini within the family Ephydridae.[2] Recent taxonomic revisions have confirmed the monophyly of the genus and its internal clades.[2] Within Allotrichoma, three subgenera are recognized, including the subgenus Neotrichoma.[2] Identification of species within this genus often relies on the examination of male terminalia.[2]
