Visual Description
Based on observations of preserved specimens, members of the genus Allopogon exhibit typical robber fly morphology.[1] The body is elongated and robust, characteristic of the family Asilidae. The head features prominent, large compound eyes, and the thorax is well-developed to support strong flight muscles. The legs are typically long and equipped with bristles, which are functional adaptations for capturing and handling prey.[1]
Biology and Distribution
Allopogon is a genus of robber flies found in the Neotropical region.[2] The genus is placed within the tribe Dasypogonini, which belongs to the subfamily Dasypogoninae.[2] A notable species within this genus is Allopogon necans (Wiedemann, 1828).[2] Taxonomic studies have clarified the synonymy within the genus, such as establishing Lochites asiloides Bigot, 1878, as a synonym of Allopogon necans (Wiedemann, 1828).[2]
