Visual Description
Allopiophila vulgaris is a small fly characteristic of the family Piophilidae. Based on observations of specimens, the adult fly exhibits a generally dark, often shiny or metallic-black body coloration. The wings are typically clear and held flat over the abdomen when at rest. The head features prominent compound eyes and relatively short antennae. The legs are slender and often dark, matching the general body tone.[1]
Ecology and Interactions
Allopiophila vulgaris (Fallén, 1820) is an accepted species within the family Piophilidae.[2] Members of this family are often associated with decaying organic matter. Records indicate that A. vulgaris has been observed feeding on snail carrion, specifically Cepaea nemoralis. Additionally, it has been documented as a prey item for other dipterans, such as the muscid fly Hydrotaea armipes.[3]
