Allopiophila lonchaeoides is a small fly characteristic of the family Piophilidae. Observations of museum specimens reveal a generally dark, sclerotized body with a shiny, metallic appearance. The head is relatively large in proportion to the body, with prominent compound eyes. The thorax and abdomen are compact, typical of the family, and the wings are clear and membranous, extending beyond the tip of the abdomen.[1]
Allopiophila lonchaeoides was originally described by the entomologist J.W. Zetterstedt in 1838 as Piophila lonchaeoides.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Allopiophila.[2]
