Visual Description
Allograpta radiata is a hoverfly characterized by a slender, elongated body typical of the genus Allograpta. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a distinct abdominal pattern consisting of alternating yellow and black bands, with the yellow markings often exhibiting a characteristic "Y" or "radiating" shape, which contributes to its specific epithet.[1] The head features large, prominent compound eyes that occupy much of the dorsal surface, and the wings are clear and held flat over the abdomen when at rest.[1]
Ecology and Distribution
Allograpta radiata (Bigot, 1857) is a recognized species within the family Syrphidae.[2] It has been documented as a flower visitor of Mangifera indica (mango) in Puerto Rico.[3] Research conducted between 2017 and 2019 at the Juana Díaz Agricultural Experiment Substation identified this species visiting several mango cultivars, including Julie, Keitt, Kent, and Tommy Atkins.[3]
