Visual Description
Allograpta piurana is a species of hoverfly within the family Syrphidae. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, individuals exhibit the characteristic appearance of the genus Allograpta.[1] They possess a slender, elongated abdomen marked with distinct yellow and black transverse bands, typical of many syrphids that mimic wasps or bees. The thorax is generally dark, often with metallic or pollinose reflections. The wings are clear and held out to the sides when at rest. The head is dominated by large, holoptic eyes in males, and the antennae are relatively short.[1]
Distribution and Taxonomy
Allograpta piurana was described by Raymond Corbett Shannon in 1927.[2] The species is recognized as an accepted name within the genus Allograpta.[2]
