Visual Description
Members of the genus Allobaccha are hoverflies characterized by a slender, often elongated abdomen, which is frequently constricted at the base, giving them a wasp-like appearance. The wings are typically clear or have distinct dark markings, particularly towards the apex. The body often exhibits metallic or dark coloration, sometimes with yellow or pale markings on the abdomen or thorax.[1]
Biology and Taxonomy
Allobaccha is a genus of hoverflies within the family Syrphidae. Taxonomic research, including the use of DNA barcoding, has been employed to improve the classification of Afrotropical hoverflies, a group for which identification keys and recent revisions have historically been limited.[2] Studies suggest that genetic divergence thresholds for species identification are most effectively determined at the genus level for this group.[2]
