Visual Description
Aleucosia calophthalma is a species of bee fly (family Bombyliidae). Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a robust, hairy body typical of many bombyliids.[1] The wings exhibit distinct patterning, often featuring dark, mottled, or banded markings across the membrane. The body coloration includes a mix of dark and lighter, often yellowish or brownish, pubescence, which contributes to a patterned appearance on the thorax and abdomen.[1]
Taxonomic History
The species was originally described by Carl Gustaf Thomson in 1869 under the name Comptosia calophthalma.[2] It is currently accepted as Aleucosia calophthalma.[2]
