Visual Description
Specimens in museum collections identified as Alectona millari are preserved sponge material from zoological/invertebrate collections (demosponges with a skeletal framework based on siliceous spicules). As with other spongillids, the most diagnostic characters for identification at this level are typically skeletal/spicule features rather than body symmetry alone.
Taxonomic Notes
Molecular phylogenetic analyses of Astrophorida (the order that includes Alectona millari) indicate that sponge spicule characters can be highly homoplastic: similar spicule morphologies may evolve independently, and spicule traits may also be secondarily lost. As a result, morphology-based classifications (including finer-scale placements) may not always match evolutionary relationships inferred from molecular data.
