GBIF lists Alectona jamaicensis as an accepted species name authored by Pang (1973), placed in the genus Alectona within the family Thoosidae and class Demospongiae.[2]

In sediment-focused sponge studies, thoosid spicule morphologies can be used to infer sponge presence from surficial sediments; however, detection of spicules reflects one of several processes (e.g., recent presence and fragmentation, predation, post-mortem incorporation, and reworking/bioturbation) and does not always equate to current living occurrence.[3]
